Approximately 60,000 people work as informal waste pickers in Chile. A study by the government highlighted the economic, social, and environmental benefits provided by informal waste pickers to municipalities. Although the contribution to national recycling efforts is significant, these jobs can only become truly green and sustainable if the working conditions are significantly improved.

The Chilean government recently adopted a new policy for the social inclusion of waste pickers, guaranteeing them, among other things, better access to national social protection schemes, enhanced capacity, and increased social recognition.
